Pakistan calls for end to Israel’s ‘campaign of terrorism’

UNITED NATIONS: Stating Gaza was running out of burial space for the Palestinians killed by brutal Israeli strikes, Pakistan on Friday urged the international community to end Israel’s ‘ongoing campaign of terror and abominable crimes’.

“Facts from Gaza are earth-shattering: more than 1,000 Palestinians have been martyred. Gaza is running out of burial space,” Farukh Amil, acting Pakistani permanent representative, told the special emergency session of the UN General Assembly.

Amil said Pakistan supported the session in view of the alarming situation in Gaza. Israel had disregarded calls for a cessation of hostilities, and had violated both human rights laws and international humanitarian laws.

He said the Gaza offensive continued right under the council’s watch and the council remained ‘seized of the situation’. Silence and inaction in such a situation was equivalent to complicity with the ongoing crimes and killings in Gaza, he added.

Ambassador Amil said Pakistan expressed complete solidarity with the Palestinians and strongly condemned the aggression in Gaza and supported the UN’s demand to end that aggression.

“The sentiments of sympathy and support of the people of Pakistan for the people of Gaza and the question of Palestine have been expressed through all means – peace demonstrations, statements of our president, prime minister and foreign minister, recent adoption of a unanimous resolution by the National Assembly of Pakistan, besides other diplomatic efforts.”

If the Security Council was not being allowed to act, the General Assembly must assume its own responsibility, and distinguish between the aggressor and the aggrieved, he said. It should compel Israel to stop its aggression, recommend a mechanism to ensure civilians’ protection, and demand compliance with international human rights laws, he said. app
